The Tightly Cropped Screen Shot Quiz

Here are ten screen stills from films that have appeared in the American Film Institute’s Top 100 list. There have been two incarnations of the list- 1997 and 2007. Films from both the 1997 and 2007 list make an appearance in this quiz. You can find the full list by going here, to the Wikipedia page. And those are the only clues I’m offering to you before you take the Tightly Cropped Screen Shot Quiz. Can you guess which AFI Top 100 film these images came from? The answer key is at the bottom.

And finally, how you rate, with the answer key found at the bottom of the page.

If you got 8 to 10, consider yourself a film genius, infinitely familiar with the nuances of the finest movies that America has had to offer. I salute you.

If you got 5 to 7, you are very well qualified for deep cinematic discussion. And you’ll need that discussion if you want to take the jump to the next level.

If you got 3 or 4, there is no shame. But you’re probably average. I’d recommend entering a military cryogenics program and unfreezing yourself 500 years into the future, just like Luke Wilson in Idiocracy.

If you got 1 or 2, you’re on your way to opening up an amazing new world of the best films around. So get to work.

If you got zero, at no point in your rambling, incoherent responses were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone who witnessed it is now dumber for having seen it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Got an 8. I’ve never seen The General or The Third Man. Great quiz!

    • First of all… great job! 8 is a great score.

Second… no “The General”? That makes me a saaaaad panda.

Sorry, I’m not well rounded when it comes to Keaton, or Chaplin for that matter. I’m a Three Stooges kinda gal. (And I keep my panda willy out of other pandas’ ears!)

  2. Got seven, and the three I didn’t get are thre I’ve never seen (tootsie, duck soup, virginia woolf).

Think that makes it official – I’m a geek!

  3. Jason

it isn’t rebecca black’s video, so i never saw it

  4. I got seven and I’ve only seen six! Ha!

  5. An 8, two 7’s, a 6… I’m impressed with you people, especially if you’re getting #3.

I got 5, but only because I had a hard time recognizing men in drag (almost didn’t get F. Murray Abraham in heavy makeup). I’m taking a protested 7.

    Donny, mark it 7!

Give me this. I’m a Cub fan and I have so little else to look forward to.
