The 12 Best Times People Yelled “NOOOOOOOO!” in a Movie

I wish life was like the movies. Whenever things go bad, you could reach as deep as you can and bellow out a deafening “NOOOOOOOOOO!” to let everyone know that you disapprove of something. Because that’s exactly what happens in movies when something bad happens. Here are 12 great examples.

Back to the Future (1985)
I’m sure that once Marty McFly took a second, he’d realize that when Doc Brown was shot, it freed Marty from the awkwardness of being a teen boy hanging out with an eccentric old man. But his first instinct was to yell “NOOOOOOOO!”.

Se7en (1995)
The 2:40 mark is where the good stuff happens. And don’t you dare click on this video if you haven’t already seen Se7en.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)
True fact: I went to college with a guy named Austin Power. All that separated him from the Mike Myers character was an s at the end of his name. We were both pitchers on our college baseball team, and he christened every bullpen fence with a “booger pole”. Also, I saw him at the theatre when he went to see Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, which was a movie that featured a really great twist on the epic “NOOOOOO!”.

Evil Dead II (1987)
Ash earns the distinguished service award for yelling “NOOOOOO!” probably the most times in a single movie in film history.

Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith (2005)
There was no way I could exclude the Darth Vader “NOOOOOOO!” from this list. It’s one of the best worst scenes in movie history. It’s absurdly over-the-top, an indelible brand on the brain to close out an ill-advised prequel trilogy.

Star Wars: Episode V- The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
While I’m at it, I should also mention Luke Skywalker’s epic “NOOOOOOO!” upon discovering Darth Vader’s horrible secret. I guess yelling “NOOOOOO!” runs in the family.

A Christmas Story (1983)
Put yourself in Ralphie’s shoes. He’d asked everyone in the world for the only thing he wanted- a Red Ryder BB Gun. They had all turned him down, one by one, alerting him that he’d shoot his eye out. And in the deepest, darkest moment of despair, he turned to the one person on earth who could understand. He turned to Santa Claus… who told him that he’d shoot his eye out. How else could you react to a rejection like that?

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
The whole LOTR trilogy is crawling with “NOOOOOO!” moments. My favorite was the first, when Frodo saw a dear friend on the verge of death. Like all movies from the early 21st century, it’d be incomplete without somber new age music in the background, although you can barely tell it’s there in the following 4 second clip:

The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977)
I’ve never been to Detroit, but if I was a racist asshole, I’d probably hate it as much as this guy.

The Godfather: Part III (1990)
Any list about people yelling would be incomplete without Al Pacino. 1:08 is the starting mark here. And as you’d expect, there are spoilers.

Jungle Fever (1991)
I guess he didn’t have two dollars.

Rocky IV
This one happens in the 30 second range and comes with the bonus effect of slow motion. Oh, 1980s, why were you so cheesy? Sadly, embedding is disabled.

  1. Haha someone had to do this list, and I’m glad it was you. Great work! Some amazing choice, but my favourite is Evil Dead 2. Bruce Campbell has some fantastic “NO!”s in that movie.

  2. Love this list. This has long been one of my favorite cliches.

  3. So true! We only see that in films! Great list!

    • I bet there’s a great “You just don’t get it, do you?!?” list to be made, too. There’s a few of those lines you only hear in movies. They’re great entertainment.

My first thought upon seeing the title was “Seven” (probably the only film I can think of where it seemed somewhat natural). But thank you for adding the Darth Vader one. It *is* notable for, if nothing else, giving us the “DO NOT WANT” meme.

    • The Vader one is so epic in how bad it is.

And agreed about Se7en being the only natural one. I guess Marty McFly’s was somewhat natural, but not as much as Se7en.

  5. The guy who met Kevin Meany

I’m glad you were able to feature Godfather 3 (the most criticized movie that has ever been nominated for Best Picture).

  6. theghettoyuppie

Reblogged this on the ghetto yuppie.

  7. Awesome list! Yeah I wish simply yelling NOOOOOO would solve everything in real life 😦

    • This gives me a great idea. I’m actually going to yell out an overly dramatic NOOOOOOOO! the next time something happens that I don’t like. I bet it’ll get a laugh.

  8. Victor De Leon

killer list! one of your best! I’ve always loved Kurt Russell’s “Nooooo!” in “Tombstone” Keep up the great work.

  9. This made me laugh out loud. Upon reading your headline, “Empire Strikes Back” leapt to mind. Glad it made the list. But I’d totally forgotten “A Christmas Story” moment and it’s a classic! Top job!

  10. I would like to see a Skywalker family duet! Sometimes I like to wake up in the morning with a satisfying bellow of NOOOOOOOOO!

  11. I see the Skywalker family has a proud tradition of Nnooooooooo! I laughed so hard at this post.

HA! You fucking included the Kentucky Fried Movie. I love you, John.

I’m at work so I can’t go nuts watching videos, but I had to watch the Se7en one just to hear Pitt wail, but then I couldn’t stop. Christ, what an awesome ending that flick has.

Though I’m not sure I should forgive you for including the Vader scream. It’s not “best worst” to me, just painfully awkward and out of character. Well, I suppose it’s totally in character for pansy Anakin, but out of character for those who knew Vader first.

Brilliant, my friend, just bloody brilliant.

I love Pitt in that scene: “OH GOD! OH GOOOOOD!”

Great list! I was hoping to see Se7en on here before I check out the list. That end scene is one of the weirdest things I quote in everyday life. It’s so twisted and serious but great to parody. WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!

  15. Palazo

    You guys forgot Hellraiser Inferno
