The 9 Best Giant Evil Underground Movie Worms

Today’s list comes right from the underground- way underground, where eyeless creatures populate the sub-landscape. And if movies are to be believed, sometimes these eyeless creatures are gigantic and wreak havoc on anyone and everything they can find. You can’t wiggle away from this list. It’s the nine best giant evil underground movie worms.

Tremors (1990)
A seismologist, two farm laborers, Reba McEntire, the dad from Family Ties, and a bunch of giant man-eating worms walk into a bar… or, actually, a general store. The Tremors worms are particularly impressive because they come equipped with a beak and a mouth filled with multiple tentacles. Also, they’re allergic to bombs thrown in their face.

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Odds are good that this film introduced you to the concept of humongous man-eating worms living underground. Fortunately, the “exogorth”, in the parlance of Star Wars nerds, only exists on an asteroid in outer-space. And there is some good in it yet, as it apparently swallows giant bats (mynocks, if you speak Star Wars nerd), preventing them from causing further havoc in the space system.

Beetlejuice (1988)
You may recall that Beetlejuice and the Maitlands occasionally had to run from, basically, a giant black and white sock with menacing teeth. It inhabited the sand of the Netherworld and foreshadowed the orange and black Christmas-tree eating stocking that Tim Burton later used in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The Burrowers (2008)
This is the smallest evil underground movie worm on the list, taking on an almost humanoid shape, with arms. But it has no eyes, lives underground, is human-sized, and is most certainly evil. The list would be horribly incomplete without this movie.

King Kong (2005)
There were many surprises living on Peter Jackson’s version of Skull Island. Not least among them was a flurry of giant worms with huge, jagged, menacing teeth.

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)
It apparently takes magic and/or religion to summon the massive white worm, which makes it lose points in my eyes. But it gains those points right back since it’s loosely based on this neat story.

Men in Black II (2002)
Not surprisingly, there aren’t many times Men in Black II will end up on a “Best of” list for anything. But, thanks to Jeff the giant subway worm, it makes the cut here.

Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)
Giant evil worms living underground are bad enough. The only way you could make a giant evil worm worse is if you willingly consume it as part of a bottle of tequila, and then puke it up, after which it develops a head with human teeth and wreaks havoc in your bedroom.

Dune (1984)
The Dune universe featured a humongous sandworm that lies in stiff competition with the exogorth from Empire Strikes Back for the largest giant evil underground worm in movie history. However, play your cards right and you can ride them like a rodeo bull.

  1. Wow, I’ve not seen all the movies in your list but remember the worms well from those I have

  2. Rick

The Lair of the White Worm is one of my all time favorites.

  3. The worms in Dune aren’t evil. In fact, they’re essential for the economics of this world as well as most space travel. They’re just territorial creatures that want those pesky humans to get off their lawn.

  4. The Poltergeist 2 worm–WTF. That was seriously alarming.

  5. The guy who met Kevin Meany

Tremors was a surprisingly good movie; however the sequels really sucked ass. The worms had legs in those. Come on, evolution doesn’t happen between sequels.

  6. I’m not sure I’ll ‘like’ this post as it reminded me of those damn bug things in King Kong – STILL freak me out to this day!

  7. My God, I have no idea how many times I’ve seen Tremors. My siblings and I watched that every time it came on cable. Which was always.

  8. Great list, though I question dubbing them all evil.

  9. I would never have thought of putting this list together. It’s great!

  10. Andr

Yeah! Huge evil Worm movies… I just downloaded Dune 1984 and was trying to think of all the giant worm movies, you missed BettleJuice’s psychedelic Saturn worms.. and now in this time The Hobbit giant worms.
