I’m a firm believer that movie tastes are organic. They constantly change as we’re exposed to new things. If you don’t believe me, take a second to think about what your favorite movie is now compared to 10 years ago, 20 years ago, or longer. How about your favorite actors, actresses, directors, and movie characters? Surely things have changed. Here’s how it plays out for me.

I look back at my old favorites, and I’m pretty damn embarassed. Lots of Adam Sandler movies in there.

I loved your favorite movies of today. I get many odd looks for my love of both disturbing horror and Pixar.
Someone at Pixar should combine them by making soul-crushing movies full of death about talking animated woodland critters.

You have to figure everyone will like one of those two things.
I’m looking forward to seeing THE FIRE WITHIN! It is true that our tastes and favorite tend to evolve over time. Mine have held fairly steady since I’ve started college, but even now I can begin to feel them evolve quite drastically from 6 years ago.
I could talk for days about The Fire Within. I’m smart enough to know that it’s not the BEST movie ever made, or even the best French New Wave movie (since it’s only half new wave at best). Hell, it’s probably not even the best movie made in 1963. But there’s so damned much to appreciate about it. There aren’t many movies that look at alcohol and suicide more realistically.
Let’s see… six years ago would make you 24 now, right? Or 25? That’s right where I was in 2000- the Kevin Smith era. It took a Netflix subscription and a shitload of Criterion to move on from it, really.

I can’t believe how much my tastes have changed over the years. Music and films. The other day my friend had Duran Duran on which I once loved and it was like nails on a fecking chalkboard! I went to college with a dude- in the mid 90s- who would blare “Hungry Like the Wolf”, and then he’d refer to himself in the third person as being “hungry like the wolf.” ” _______ (guy’s name) is hungry like the wolf!!!” It was… ridiculous.

Awesome post, John! You’re right our taste in movies and actors do change over the years. There are however some movies that I always love no matter how old I am, and I think I always will. So movies like Roman Holiday, Ben-Hur, a bunch of Disney movies will always have a special place in my heart. I didn’t like costume dramas when I was younger though, but now I absolutely love them!
I wonder, does Halloween count as a costume drama? He’s got a mask and everything.
And you’re very right, Ruth. I can’t imagine I’ll ever dislike, say, The Big Lebowski, or The Seventh Seal, or even Idiocracy or The Muppets or Buster Keaton’s silent work or… well, you get the picture. Everyone’s got ’em.
