Great Moments in Movie History (Using Stick Figures): About Schmidt (2002)

It’s time to fire the “Great Moments” series back up after a hiatus for a few weeks. There are a lot of newer readers here, so it’s probably worth giving an explanation. When I started this site, the one thing that I knew I wanted to do was institute a series of great moments in movie history, memorialized using stick figures. It’s where the TDYLF tagline comes from– come for the stick figures, stay for the Bergman. It’s been sporadic but I’ve been making them more frequently the last few months. You can find the full list of other Great Moments in Movie History (using stick figures) here, along with every time I’ve used the phrase ‘Great Moments in Movie History’). 2000-2010 was mostly void of truly memorable movie scenes, but there are at least a few that stand out. And today, I’ve visited one of those scenes by converting it to stick figure form. Today’s great moment is courtesy of Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt (2002). Continue reading

Great Moments in Movie History: The Phantom of Liberty (1974)

It’s Friday, so that means it’s time for another “Great Moments in Movie History (Using Stick Figures)”. My choice this week is one of my very favorite movies ever made- Luis Buñuel’s masterpiece of conceptual surrealism, The Phantom of Liberty (1974). I love every single vignette in the film but the one that made me such a huge fan of the movie was one of the very first. I’m paraphrasing the actual quote from the character, but it’s close enough to make the point about what Buñuel was doing. Enjoy! Continue reading

Great Moments in Movie History (Using Stick Figures): Total Recall (1990)

It’s Friday again, which means it’s time for another Great Moment in Movie History (Using Stick Figures). There’s been a lot of buzz in the last week about the upcoming remake of Total Recall starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and Bryan Cranston, amongst others. It might be a decent movie, but it’s hard not to enjoy the original from 1990. There are a lot of memorable scenes from the original. But one of those scenes was three times as memorable as the others. Here it is, in stick figure form. Continue reading

Great Moments in Movie History: Taxi Driver (1976)

A long time ago (2 years) in a galaxy far, far away (about four miles from where I’m sitting right now), I started this site with no real purpose. But one thing that I knew I wanted to do was institute a series of great moments in movie history, memorialized using stick figures. It’s where the tagline comes from– come for the stick figures, stay for the Bergman. I busted out several early on, especially in the first year of operation. Then it slowed down almost to a crawl. I realized the other day that it’s damn near at a total stop. I haven’t done one since October (you can find the full list here, along with every time I’ve used the phrase ‘Great Moments in Movie History’). I need to get back to my roots. This is all a really long way of saying, “Hey, I turned Travis Bickle and Taxi Driver into a stick figure!” Enjoy: Continue reading

Great Moments in Movie History: Dead Alive/Brain Dead (1992)

Before Peter Jackson was the engineer behind the amazing Lord of the Rings trilogy, he made several amusing low budget films. They were all fantastic but Dead Alive remains my favorite. In the spirit of the season and to commemorate one of the movie’s finer moments, I’ve memorialized it by adding it to the Great Moments in Movie History (Using Stick Figures) collection: Continue reading

Great Moments in Movie History: Planet of the Apes

After enjoying Rise of the Planet of the Apes so much a month ago, I realized that the only other movie in the series that I had seen was the original. Inspired, I re-watched the original and then watched the rest of the original five films in the series (this excludes the Burton film). And while the rest had their flaws, they also had plenty of fun. I enjoyed it. In fact, I enjoyed it enough that I was motivated to create a “Great Moment in Movie History” for 1968’s Planet of the Apes. Enjoy! As always, click on the image for the full-resolution version. Great Moments in Movie History: Caddyshack

The topic of today’s “Great Moment in Movie History” comes to us courtesy of Caddyshack’s lovable scamp, Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield). Many characters wreaked havoc on Bushwood Country Club but none did it as well as Czervik. No character could get under Judge Smails’ (Ted Knight) skin the way that Al Czervik did. I’ve memorialized his greatest moment harassing Judge Smails. Enjoy! Continue reading

Great Moments in Movie History: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done a “Great Moments in Movie History”, mostly because I’ve lost my use of Adobe Illustrator. That said, I still have Photoshop. And because of that, I can give you the return of the slightly different “Great Moments in Movie History”. Today, we’ll take a look at a personal favorite, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Specifically, I’ve used stick figures to replicate the scene where a “polar bear” (a.k.a. a guy in the worst polar bear costume ever made) chases the two kids into an ice cave on the North Pole. Enjoy! Be sure to click on it to get the full-res version. Continue reading
