Don Draper vs. Principal Skinner

Friend and occasional TDYLF contributor Josh Katz recently pointed out an interesting fact about AMC’s smash hit, Mad Men. Specifically, Don Draper’s backstory is eerily similar to the story that The Simpsons writers created to flesh out Seymour Skinner’s backstory in “The Principal and the Pauper” episode. Just how similar are they? Find out after the jump. Continue reading

Homer Simpson’s Thought Bubbles: A Collection

One of the best parts of The Simpsons is the cacophony of stupidity that we see in Homer’s head whenever we see his thought bubbles. It’s hilarious- an orgy of dancing bears, monkeys, cows, clowns, and occasionally Flanders’ butt cheeks. Here’s a collection of Homer’s thought bubbles. I wish it was more comprehensive, although 19 examples is a good start. Continue reading

Today, I’m going to give you all a little snapshot into my neuroses. It’s almost as neurotic as my theater ritual. You see, I punt away an entire day of my week, every week, no matter what month or year it is. I remember Sunday, and I keep it holy… because of television. Continue reading

The 10 Best TV Show Title Sequences

I am a total sucker for TV show title sequences. In a matter of a minute or two, title sequences teleport us into the world that the show’s creators present for us. They put us in the mood and they evoke everything that the show is about. Here are the 10 best. Continue reading

Eat My Ten Favorite Shorts from the Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror

One of my favorite parts of each October is the Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror episode. Major League Baseball wreaks havoc with it, forcing it to air on a different date each year, but it’s never been a reason for me to miss it. Including this year’s episode, which aired on October 7th, there have now been 24 Treehouse of Horror episodes, each possessing a trio of horror shorts. That’s a grand total of 72 Simpsons‘ horror shorts. Here are my ten favorite. Continue reading

The 8 Best Parodies of Gone With the Wind

Thanks to the Warner Brothers Blu-ray Elite program, I recently received a free copy of Gone With the Wind (1939). The holiday weekend afforded me a chance to re-visit the sweeping epic. I’ll have a review up soon enough, but for now, I’d like to discuss the copious amount of times the film has been parodied. As I re-watched it, I couldn’t help but think of many, many times it’s been spoofed through the years. Here are my eight favorites. Continue reading

The 10 Best Fake Movie Titles from The Simpsons

A few weeks ago while writing about FuturamaI pointed out that one of my favorite parts of The Simpsons is how much humor they bury in the surroundings. The stores, the products sold in those stores, the newspaper headlines, and the marquees around town all feature bonus humor above and beyond the plot and dialogue. Never is it more evident than on the family’s various treks to the Springfield Googolplex to see a movie. There are tons of uproarious film titles that have appeared on the theatre marquee through the years. For instance… Continue reading

The Simpsons and The Super Bowl

When you’ve been making a TV show for more than two decades, especially one that embraces cultural satire the way The Simpsons does, you’re bound to feature key parts of the zeitgeist a few times. And in the case of something so big in the zeitgeist–The Super Bowl–The Simpsons have featured it more than just a few times. Throw in the fact that their host network, Fox, has aired several Super Bowls during these last two decades and you can see that it’d be fertile territory for Matt Groening’s comic army. Here’s a list of references to the Super Bowl on The Simpsons: Continue reading
